Gymnema Sylvestre

Description : Gymnema, also known as Gurmar or Gymnema sylvestre, is referred to in the Ayurvedic texts as the “sugar destroyer” and has been used in Ayurveda since 6th century BC. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine as asafe and natural approach to help support sugar metabolism.

Gymnema Sylvestre is a staple herb of the Ayurvedic apothecary, traditionally used for supporting balanced blood sugar levels and dulling the palate to the taste of sweets. Gymnema is fascinating in that it works a multifaceted path towards maintaining healthy blood sugar.

On the one hand, Gymnema Sylvestre helps support healthy pancreas functions. By working directly on the level of the blood (rakta), it helps balance the blood sugar levels.

Uses : The plant is acrid, antiinflammatory, anodyne, liver tonic, emetic, diuretic. I is useful in hepatosplenomegaly, dypepsia, constipation, jaundice, halminthiasis, cardiopathy, amenorrhoea. The fresh leaves when chewed have the remarkable property of paralysing the sense of taste for sweet and bitter substance for some time.

The plant has been used in traditional medicine, most notably to control blood sugar. Use of gymnema as a lipid-lowering agent, for weight loss, and to prevent cavities has also been investigated, primarily in rat or mouse studies. However, little to no clinical information is available to support the use of gymnema for any indication.

Side Effects : The major side effects of Gymnema Sylvestre are raising blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, and liver intoxication. Raising blood pressure could be a problem if you are diabetic or have a history of high blood pressure. Lowering blood sugar could be a good thing to some people and potentially help them. However, lowering blood sugar dramatically is never a good thing and can lead to potential further health risks such as shaking, feeling jittery, loss of sleep, confusion, and loss of muscle control. These would all be a risky venture and would be ill advised to anyone. The major problem of Gymnema would be the liver intoxication. This would lead to several harmful risks and would be the biggest impact of all the side affects. Side effects are only a chance as with any drug. These side affects are not at all guaranteed upon usage of Gymnema Sylvestre. The percentage of people who actually recieve these side affects upon usage is very low.
